5 Pairs of Socks – Learning To Trust God
Updated: Jun 6
Trusting God can be as simple as believing for 5 pairs of socks or as complex as believing for eternal salvation.
In over forty years of pastoring in the same city, in the same church I have had the amazing privilege to see multitudes of people make the decision to trust God and come to Jesus. They are from all different walks of life, and they all have their own reasons. Sometimes they’re sitting in church, and they come to the realization that they have a real need for Christ. They could be in hard place in their life financially, in a relationship, or maybe just in themselves. The reason they come to Jesus is not something to get caught up on. God will take us in whatever way, or condition we come to Him. The most important thing is that we accept Jesus, and learn to trust Him.
Salvation is the starting point of trusting Him.
It says in Romans 5:2 that through faith in Jesus we are introduced to His grace. It says that we’ve only been introduced to God’s grace, now that we’re saved we learn how to trust Him in all areas of our lives.
"through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and [a]we celebrate in hope of the glory of God." Romans 5:2 (NASB)
Trusting God is not an event, it is a day-by-day process.
We should not get frustrated with ourselves when we realize we have not been trusting God for something. We should look at it as an opportunity to start letting Him provide for us, instead of trying to work it out ourselves.
Our walk with God is exactly that, a walk.
In II Corinthians 5 it says that we are called to walk by faith and not by sight. The word “walk” means our daily manner of living, or proof of ability. That means we should live constantly trusting God. It also means that our lives should prove the ability (or power) of God.
"For we walk by faith, not by sight." II Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)
5 Pairs of Socks
It is all about taking one step at a time, and everyone starts somewhere. My starting place was believing God for 5 pairs of socks. It sounds like a pretty small thing, right? But God tells us not to look down on small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10).
Everything in life is a seed.
When we plant seeds in life God will make those seeds grow. So, I planted a seed of faith by believing God for the socks. I had the money to pay for them. The 5 pairs of socks were not an immediate need in my life, but learning to trust God was, as it is in your life too. I prayed and believed God for the socks every day for around two weeks. Then God used a man to give me the exact amount of money needed to buy those 5 pairs of socks. It was a small thing in the material world, but it was a huge first step in my faith. The Word of God became real to me when that man handed me the exact amount of money it would cost to buy those 5 pairs of socks.
Take a small step of faith.
If you want to learn how to trust God, I encourage you to find something small to believe Him for. Do not be discouraged with a small start. You have to begin somewhere and sometime, so start today. If you don’t get what you’re believing for right away, don’t give up. God is faithful, He will provide..
It is exciting to step out and trust God.
It is an entirely different way of living your life. It is the only way to really live. Acts 26 in the Message Bible says that real living begins when we believe God. The amazing thing about God is when you trust Him, He always comes through. He will never leave you, and His Word will never fail you. He watches over His word to make it happen in your life (Jeremiah 1:12).
Trust God daily.
Some of the main things we should trust God for daily are His wisdom, favor, and guidance. God has a plan for every single day of our lives, and if we only know how to trust Him for the “big things” we will miss it. His wisdom will show us how to navigate our relationship with our spouse, how to act in love and not in anger. His favor will open doors for us. His guidance will open our eyes to all the opportunities we have to share His love with lost people. However, we have to trust Him.
What do we do when we receive the things we trust God for?
Sometimes we trust God for things like a new job, a relationship, a house, a promotion, etc. But this isn’t always the case. What do we do when we receive the things we trust God for? We get promoted, we move into the new house, now what? Do we stop trusting God until the next need comes up in our lives? No. Absolutely not. In the “in between times” when there isn’t an obvious need we still trust God.
Make God’s Word the most important word in life.
The main thing we have to do in learning how to trust God is renew our minds to His Word. I think that Romans 12:2 is a hinging verse in the Bible.
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2 (NKJV)
Until we start making God’s Word the most important word in our lives we will always fall short in trusting Him, because we’ll allow other voices to stop us from totally leaning on God. However, when we start letting God’s word live large inside of us (Colossians 3:16) trusting God becomes easy. It becomes not our second nature, but our first nature, to go to Him with everything allowing Him to guide us, and provide for us more than we could ask, think, or even imagine.
